Summary: Audie plays a bank robber named Joe Maybe. After holding up a bank, he takes on the identity of his widely-known pursuer, a famous U.S. Federal Marshal. Riding through the countryside with his new identity, Maybe finds himself in a town where he is confronted by the local judge, Judge Kyle, played by Walter Matthau. Under pressure to live up to his assumed identity, Maybe agrees to be the town marshal. Even still, he makes plan to rob the local bank. A beautiful woman from his past, Tessa Milotte played by Gia Scala, nearly derails his plans with the threat of revealing Maybe's actual identity. To prevent his secret from becoming public knowledge, Maybe and Milotte pose as husband and wife and are given a degree of respectability by the townfolk neither have ever enjoyed. The couple's fondness for a young orphan boy complicates the situation and Maybe's true identity is later discovered by the Judge Kyle. However, another robber tries to break into the bank forcing Maybe to decide whether or not he should pursue a life of crime or to become e a law abiding citizen.
