Summary: Billy the Kid (Audie Murphy) is caught up in the middle of the famous, historic Lincoln County, New Mexico range war. When a rancher Billy works for and admires is murdered, he soon becomes a wanted man after he goes on a killing spree. Unfortunately, Billy is partially a victim because a new ranch boss shrewdly takes advantage of Billy's naiveté and encourages the young gunman to kill for revenge. Despite the encouragement, the ranch boss is nowhere to be found when Billy is blamed for the crime spree. Billy flees to the hills to escape but hangs around the area to be near the coniving ranch owner's young and pretty wife. Eventually, Billy is confronted in a showdown by Pat Garrett in a shootout.
