Audie's List of Commemorative Stamp Petitioners
About the Petition and its Supporters:
In 1996, the webmaster of this website learned of an effort by Ms. Dianne Thomason and her husband James to gather signatures for a petition requesting a stamp to be commemorated for Audie Murphy. In an effort to help, a website petition form was created. The number of signatures gathered dramatically grew from about 7,000 to over 105,000 over the course of 3 years. Every single petition was printed on a separate piece of paper and mailed to the U.S. Postoffice post master general in Washington, D.C.
Below are links to two years worth of the website petition supporters and their comments (1999 petitions are not included because of the tremendous volume received that year.) Many displayed are written by children and all are interesting, uplifting, and inspirational.

A Visit With Audie
by Diane Bates Thomason - 1996
American Legion Post #17; Greenville, Texas
From those of us left here on earth,
We live with memories of all your worth
You whisper softly - "Please don't cry;
I'm only on a trip - I did not die.
I love you all for keeping my memory alive,
And watch over you while on this stamp drive,
Yes, I would be grateful for a stamp in my name,
But, what I did while on earth was not for fame.
I fought side by side with my fellow comrades;
To see freedom for all and pride for our flag.
Defeat belongs to cowards - not to us who fought.
March on Comrades - your goals will not be for naught.
Your pleas will fall on Statemen's ears;
and God will be with you - so have no fears."
"I didn't."
