Thank you for your recent letter and petitions to the Postmaster General Marvin Runyon expressing support for the issuance of a cemmorative stamp honoring Audie Murphy. I must inform you that the Citizen's Stamp Advisory Committee has reviewed the nomination of Audie Murphy, but it was not recommended for issuance. However, you will be pleased to learn that Lieutenant Audie Murphy is featured in the last edition of our World War II series. Enclosed are copies of this page from the 1945: Victory at Last book. The World War II series is featured on page 22 of our latest stamp and stamp product catalog which is also enclosed for your review. As information, from 1991 to 1995, we issued ten stamps that coincided with the 50th anniversary years of World War II, 1941-1944. The final book was issued in September 1995. This series which includes 50 stamps and five maps, is designed to help all Americans, young and old, remember the war, understand it, and appreciate the way it influenced our whole country. To ensure that we appropriately recognized World War II through our stamp program, members of the Citizens' Stamp Advisory Committee worked with the chief of military history at the Department of the Army and with the Office of the Historian at the Department of State. Preliminary work on the series began in 1981. We appreciate your interest in our stamp program. Sincerely, /-----Signed-----/ James C. Tolbert, Jr. Manager Stamp Development |
