WHEREAS, The American Legion is a patriotic organization of
wartime veterans who have dedicated themselves to the service of the
community, state and nation; and
WHEREAS, The American Legion diligently strives to preserve the
memories and incidents of our associations in the great wars and to
inculcate a sense of individual obligation to the community, state and
nation; and
WHEREAS, The government of the United States of America issues
postage stamps honoring individuals who have made significant contributions
to our nation including music, movie and entertainment personalities; and
WHEREAS, Audie L. Murphy was the most decorated U.S. soldier in World
War II, receiving 21 medals for valor including three Purple Hearts for
wounds received in action and the nation's highest award for valor, the
Medal of Honor; and
WHEREAS, Audie L. Murphy's example of patriotism and personal sacrifices
are worthy of recognition by our nation and are an excellent example for
today's society, ensuring that his contributions to our great country are
not forgotten; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, By The American Legion in National Convention
assembled in Salt Lake City, Utah, September 3, 4, 5, 1996, That The American
Legion recommended that a United States of America postage stamp be issued
honoring the late Audie L. Murphy.
