Honorable Harry Reid
United States Senator
500 East Charleston Boulevard
Las Vegas, NV 89104-1319
Dear Senator Reid:
This responds to your February 28 letter on behalf of Ms. Patricia L.
Childs, concerning a proposal for a commemortive stamp honoring Medal of Honor
winner Audie Murphy.
I can certainly appreciate the interest in an Audie Murphy postage stamp. Each
year the Postal Service receives a large number of letters recommending literally
thousands of distinguished Americans and events in American history as new
stamp subjects. Unfortunately, only a limited number of stamps can be issued
each year. For this reason, the Citizens' Stamp Advisory Committee has been
established to review all suggestions and to make recommendations for future
stamps based on national interest, historical perspective, and other criteria.
This proposal was considered by the Committee; however, it was not adopted.
This decision should not be interpreted as a negative judgment on Mr. Murphy's
achievements or his place in history. Rather, it recognizes the very real
limitations our stamp program --- or any stamp program would have in honoring
all individuals suggested as stamp subjects.
I regret that I am unable to offer a more favorable response, although I
appreciate the opportunity to explain our position. If I can be of assistance
in other postal matters, please let me know.

WEBMASTER'S COMMENT: With respect to the letter signed by Mr. Currier,
it is ironic that the country of Sierra Leone, located on the west coast of Africa,
managed to publish a stamp commemorating Audie Murphy. This particular country
depends on its stamp revenues from collectors worldwide to provide an important part of its
overall fiscal budget each year. Sierra Leone has already proven that an Audie
Murphy stamp is not only possible, but profitable.
