VETERANS OF FOREIGN WARS
OF THE UNITED STATES

Dear Mr. Childs:
Thank you for writing VFW National Headquarters and for your request for our
assistance in calling for a commemorative stamp honoring Audie Murphy. James
E. Nier, Commander-In-Chief of the Veterans of Foreign Wars has asked me to
reply to your concerns. He regrets that his travel schedule prevents him
from personally answering your letter.
At the 95th VFW National Convention, August 1994 and 96th VFW National
Convention, August 1995, our delegates approved resolutions calling for a
commemorative stamp for Audie Murphy. I have enclosed copies of both
resolutions for you. While this resolution was not presented at the 97th VFW
National Convention, the previous resolutions remain in effect until they are
rescinded.
Unfortunately, the Citizens Stamp Advisory Board issue stamps that have
marketing potential over honoring Americans like Audie Murphy or long
established veterans organizations like the Jewish War Veterans of the USA.
The Jewish War Veterans celebrated one hundred years of existence in 1996 and
they were not successful in obtaining a commemorative stamp. The Veterans of
Foreign Wars will have our hundreth anniversary in 1999 and we are not hopeful
that a stamp will be issued for us by the Citizens Stamp Advisory Board.
However, this will not diminish our efforts to honor Audie Murphy.
We appreciate hearing from you as it provides us the opportunity to inform
you of our actions on behalf of the veterans of our nation.
With best regards,
| SINCERELY,
