Dear Committee Members:
I am pleased to offer my enthusiastic support for the effort to honor Audie
Murphy with a U.S. commemorative stamp.
Audie Murphy was born near Kingston, Texas on June 20, 1924 and enlisted in
the U.S. Army around the date of his eighteenth birthday. Texans are
justifiably proud of the achievements of Audie Murphy, but he is worthy of
national recognition due to his heroic actions during World War II. Murphy
received every medal that our country gives for valor, and on June 2, 1945,
he was awarded the Medal of Honor for exceptional valor in action near Holtzwhir,
France on January 26, 1945.
Following his military service, Murphy went on to become a successful movie
actor, author, and country and western song writer. After his death, the
Veterans Administration Hospital in San Antonio was named in his honor. He
has been recognized by the State of Texas with two Official Texas Historical
Markers.
I am aware that there is a nationwide effort to encourage the USPS to issue
a stamp honoring Audie Murphy, and I am pleased to join with the citizens of
our nation who are requesting that a commemorative stamp to honor this great
American.
