The Audie Murphy Rose

Audie Murphy Rose
Did you know that in 1957, Audie Murphy had a rose named in his honor? This rose was one he apparently enjoyed too because he planted them in his yard at his home in Toluca Lake, California. The rose is smaller than most domestic roses seen in flower shops. This particular rose is propigated from root stock by the grower. Because of this, it takes about a year to receive the plant once an order has been placed.

The Audie Murphy Rose bush above was won by John Shirley who was a member of the 3rd Infantry Division during World War II. John received this particular plant around 1987 at a 3rd Infantry Division Outpost meeting. John, who attends meetings with Outpost 54 of Northern and Central California, states the plant was donated for an Outpost raffle by a veteran from a signal company of the Third Infantry Division. The plant, which grows in Mr. Shirley's garden, is still strong and vigorous.
