| Rex J. Sabine | Oak Harbor, Washington | Your refusal to commemorate Audie Murphy by not issuing a stamp in his memory is typical of American pseudo-culture. I expect to see a stamp commemorating Al Capone one of these days. It would be more proof of the total lack of values in this country (except, of course, the Almighty Dollar). | ||

Sir: As a citizen of the United States, my family and I find it incredible that a hero of Audie Murphy's magnitude would not be considered eligible for a commemorative stamp or stamp series. My husband and I, as most citizens of America have relatives that have fought and died fighting for our freedom in wars beginning with the War of 1812, and perhaps earlier, believe that these men and women should be honored in as many ways possible. Audie Murphy was an individual that highly deserves recognition. We ask that you consider this matter and appeal to you to issue stamps honoring Audie Murphy. Sincerely: Charles and Sherry Sanford
| Marietta Satifka, Veteran | Washington, Pennsylvania | Audie Murphy was there for the United States when it called. Let these same United States honor Audie Murphy as we reach the year 2000. | ||

Dear Sir, I am sure you have heard this before, but, how can this country put Bugs Bunny on a stamp and at the same time refuse to honor one of its greatest heroes. I am a stamp collector and it seems that the government has no problem coming up with dozens of stamps every year to make sure that collectors keep putting money into stamps that do not get used. I think it is a total disgrace to this country that Audie Murphy is not one of them. I realize the selections are made by a panel, but you must have some control over their choices. Please give this man the honor he has earned.

| Daniel Schweizer | Fort Drum, New York | Audie Murphy should be honored on a commemorative stamp. | ||
| Barbara L. Scott | Indianapolis, Indiana | Audie should be honored on a commemorative stamp. | ||
| Carl D. Scott | Manor, Texas | Let us remember our heroes who helped stop the Nazis in World War II. | ||
| Michael G. Scott | Durham North, Carolina | Please consider a group of stamps commemorating medal of honor recipients. Audie Murphy should be honored as part of this group. | ||
| Frederick W. Seaman | Alexandria, Louisiana | Shame on you Mr. Postmaster General, if anyone is more deserving of being honored by a commemorative stamp, I do not know who it could possibly by. | ||
| Marvin C. Seibert | Colorado Springs, Colorado | Audie Murphy is a true American hero. It is time we honor his contribution to this nation! I strongly recommend that a commemorative stamp be issued in honor of Audie L. Murphy, the most decorated American military service member who ever fought during World War II or any other war. Audie Murphy was the recipient of every medal of valor our country could give including the Medal of Honor and medals of valor from the countries of France and Belgium. | ||
| Karen Selman | Casper, Wyoming | Audie should be honored with an entire stamp series. | ||
| Michael L. Shaffer | Jacksonville, Florida | How could he have been ignored this long?! | ||
| Richard W. Shaffer | Martinsburg, West Virginia | Audie should be honored with an entire stamp series. | ||
| Victoria Shaffer | Martinsburg, West Virginia |
To Mr. Runyon: Audie Murphy was a great hero who deserves the recognition of the U.S. postal service by honoring him with an entire stamp series.
| Patrick Shaughnessy | Glendora, California |
Although I am unaware of the process by which topics and/or individuals are
chosen for commemorative stamp issuance, I find it quite disturbing that the
most decorated soldier in U.S. history would be overlooked for such an honor.
It is all the more aggravating to hear that "Bugs Bunny" somehow warrants the
public respect due those individuals who, at great risk to themselves and to
their family's welfare, served their country, and often laid down their lives,
so that we could issue stamps as a means of recognizing their impact on the
American way of life. What did "Bugs Bunny" or his creators, for that matter,
ever do to impact American culture that could even remotely be compared with
the countless, selfless acts of heroism performed by the men and women of
our armed forces, let alone the most decorated one of them all? It is not my intention to put Audie L. Murphy at odds with "Buggs Bunny", or any other character, no matter how cartoonish in comparison. It is you who has weighed them both on the scales of relevance and found the animated scriblings and voice-overs of the "Looney Tunes" and "Merrie Melodies" carrying the significant weight. Please reconsider Audie L. Murphy for a commemorative stamp or perhaps a stamp series. DO THE RIGHT THING!!! You can if you really want to.
| Dave Shaw | Waynesburg, Pennsylvania | Audie Murphy should be honored with an entire stamp series. | ||
| Derek T. Shaw | Monterey, California | Let's see a Big Bad Audie Murphy Stamp series in that good ol' US Post Office tradition of excellence! | ||
| Wayne Sherlin | Chaparral, New Mexico | Audie Murphy should be honored with an entire stamp series. | ||
| C. L. Sherrer | Bonham, Texas | Audie was one of the greatest Americans and should honor America with a stamp. | ||
| Mikki Shields | ????, Pennsylvania | We've honored several "icons", now let's honor a true hero! | ||
| Eldon D. Shinkle | Tooele, Utah | It's a shame we have to resort to a petition to honor an American hero. | ||
| Dee Shipman | Brady, Texas | A man should have what he earned!!!!! | ||
| Dave Shively | San Jose, California | The United States of America has very few true heroes. Those who earned the Medal of Honor should be considered heroes and be properly recognized. Audie Murphy is the name most closely associated with WWII Medal of Honor winners, as is Alvin York in WWI. It is most fitting and proper that Audie Murphy be honored with a stamp series, and should be only the first in a series of Medal of Honor winners. | ||
| Jim Showen | Kendallville, Deleware | Audie Murphy is indeed a great American who deserves this honor! If we can honor a cartoon chracter, we can surely honor someone who defended his and our country in a time of war! | ||
| John Shuford | Garland, Texas | Failure to remind the populace of those who did so much to defend the country against tyranny is a disgrace! | ||
| Barbara Shull, Police Officer | Bullhead City, Arizona | We would all be honored to have a stamp with Audie Murphy. This is part of our history and he was an American hero who deserves to be recognized by our government as such in this manner. | ||
| Kevin M. Siegmund | Fort Drun, New York | We have enough anti-military liberals on Pennsylvania Avenue. Show that you support true American heroes. | ||
| Richard Silva | Cochranville, Pennsylvania | We had to almost "sit-in" the Postmaster General's office to get the POW/MIA stamp. Please don't make us do this. It seems that any cartoon, leftist, Hollywood dweeb, or dead politician can get on a stamp. Why not the people who helped to make us or keep us free? | ||
| William A. Simpson | Tampa, Florida | If the Wolfman, Frankenstein monster, and Bela Lugosi get a stamp, then a true American hero should get his! | ||
| Sergeant First Class Scott A. Sinclair | Portland, Oregon | How can anyone ever say no to this request?! This is one of the greatest of our American heroes, and to deny him this is to deny America a chance to celebrate his life. He was the perfect example of an American, and as such, should be honored. | ||

Charles F. Smith Retired U.S. Army | Raytown, Missouri | It will never be known how many, or who, are still alive today, nor will it be known who would not have been born had it not been for First Lieutenant Audie L. Murphy, AMERICAN. If we can honor Bugs Bunny, I'm sure that we can honor a man who was willing to give his life, if necessary, to his country or his men. Please consider this and honor him very soon. I served in WWII, Korea, and Vietnam, all infantry, and believe me I know what kind of man he was.

| John H. Smith | Holden, Maine | Audie was my hero when I was about sixteen, has been so all my life. I am sixty-four now and would like to see his picture on a US stamp. | ||
| CW4 Mark G. Smith, USAR | Marion, Illinois | You will find no greater American to commemorate, than Audie Murphy. | ||
| Pamela M. Smith | Wellsville, Ohio | I don't know why you need a petition to create an Audie Murphy commemorative stamp. He was a great man and a hero and I think this stamp is long overdue. | ||
| Sandra M. Smith | Rochester, New York | There cannot be a more deserving member of the armed forces of the United States, living or dead, for this honor. I strongly urge the U.S. Postal Service to consider this matter. | ||
| Scott L. Smith | Temple, Texas | Give this man a stamp ... you would think Mr. Runyon would rather honor O.J. instead of Audie! | ||
| Stan Smith | Potomac, Maryland | Audie Murphy is recognized as the "most decorated combat soldir of WWII". He was destined to cast a longer shadow than most Medal of Honor recipients. Is it not embarassing to the United States government that three foreign countries have already deemed it appropriate to issue their own stamps honoring this American icon? A stamp tribute is long overdue. | ||
| Stephen W. Smith | Waco, Texas | This honor for Audie is way overdue. Please expedite this petition. Thanks. | ||

| Robt. E. Starkie | Fall City, Washington | Audie should be honored on a commemorative stamp. | ||
| Roger D. Starnes, Patriot | Pensacola, Florida | I think it is shameful that you staunchly refuse to honor this great American HERO with an individual or stamp series. I say BALONEY to your notion that Audie Murphy has already been honored through the issuance of a single Medal of Honor stamp in 1983. Come on sir, do the right thing. Issue that stamp. | ||
| CW3 Jerome Steber | East Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania | I think it is shameful that the U.S. Postal Service can honor a cartoon character such as Bugs Bunny but has not taken the time to honor the greatest soldier that has served our country. | ||

| Roger G. Stillwell | N. Potomac, Maryland | Dear Mr. Runyon: I urge you to join with your fellow Americans in honoring Audie Murphy with an appropriate US commemorative stamp at the earliest oportunity. This action is long overdue. It is only fitting and proper that Mr. Murphy be remembered as this nation's most decorated combatant in World War II. We have seen stamps in recent years saluting everything from dogs to movie stars. It is time that Audie Murphy join other distinguished American heroes with a stamp of his own. Sincerely, Roger G. Stillwell | ||
| Kirk Storey, Fire Fighter | Haworth, Oklahoma | It is high time to start recognizing the heroism of young Americans on the fields of battle! You seem to have a leftist opinion, much like that of our draft-dodging president. I would strongly urge you to act swiftly in this matter, else the people of this great country, who pay your salary, might just demand you be sent back to where you came from! Get with the program! | ||
| Elizabeth Stratton | Ashburn, Virginia | Audie Murphy should be honored on a commemorative stamp. | ||
| Michael V. Stratton, Retired Army | Ashburn, Virginia | I find it disgraceful that stamps have been issued commemorating people who have abused drugs in their lives yet Audie Murphy has no stamp nor formal recognition. Stamps honoring Janis Joplin, Jimmy Hendricks, Elvis Presley, Marilyn Monroe, and Billy Holiday, all of whom either abused drugs or were killed by a drug overdose, are a disgrace to the USPS. | ||
