As I recall Wickham was vbery much liked by the troops during his tenure as CoS. Your recollection reinforces what i had always heard.
Incidentally, I think in my original post I mentioned I had to write him three times to get his endorsement. He attached a separate note and stated he never recieved any of my previous correspondance. That makes sense as I did not have his apartment number at the time so I simply put his street address on the envelope without it and sent it anyway.
Interestingly, they were never 'returned to sender', so I had no idea he never recieved them; and we wonder why the postal service is going broke! Go figure!
