SORRY IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH AUDIE, BUT I THOUGHT THIS WOULD BE OF INTEREST.

THIS IS A ENGLISH ONE POUND NOTE THAT HAS THE ENTIRE CREW OF THE ENOLA GAY SIGNED IT! AND IT HAS GENE AUTRY'S SIGNITURE ALSO. IF ANYONE KNOWS HOW OR WHY GENE AUTRY WOULD HAVE SIGNED THIS, WHEN AND WHERE, TOO, PLEASE LET ME KNOW. THIS IS IN THE CUSTODY OF MY DETECTIVE OFFICE AT THE MOMENT. CAN'T SAY ANY MORE ABOUT THAT, THO. ANY HISTORY OF THIS NOTE WOULD BE HELPFUL.

THE OTHER SIDE. THE DODO BIRD OR WHATEVER IT IS ON THERE HAS THE CAPTION 'BACK TO ARKANSAS' AND I WAS TOLD THE TAIL-GUNNER WAS FROM ARKANSAS. NOT SURE WHICH ONE THAT EVEN WAS. THIS IS THE BEST THE SCANNER COULD DO WITHOUT TAKING IT OUT OF THE PLEXIGLASS, WHICH WE WON'T DO.

David, found the following on Google that might explain Gene Aurty's signature.

"During the days leading up to the secret mission the 509th had a well-known visitor, the singing cowboy Gene Autry and his USO troupe, who stopped off at Tinian aftering performing on nearby Saipan. In fact the entertainer observed the hust-hush activity of the aircrews and could only speculate what might be in the works. (Autry was on the island when the B29 dubbed Enola Gay returned from Hirroshima, and he heard the news."

When Gene Autry volunteered for the army during WWII, he was a pilot in the Army Air Corp, and his job during the war was ferrying planes. Perhaps he became acquainted with some of the guys who later made up the crew of the ENOLA GAY. Just a thought.

Betty, you are right, David does have some neat stuff, but so do you. We Audie collectors each collect different stuff, military, movie & personal. Maybe we need to combine all our stuff and open the Audie Murphy Collector's Museum.

Hi David,
Any Chance of getting Wayne to send you or Eva photos that can be posted on the board. I for one
would love to be able to see his collection and I would bet my last dollar there are a lot of other
members of this board who would feel the same way.. Just my thoughts.. Shirley Jean.
Thanks to members like you, this web site just keeps getting better and better... SJP
