What do y'all think of The Red Badge of Courage? It was a book I was completely ambivalent about in high school, so it wasn't high on my list of films to watch. Only my regard for Audie prompted me to do so. Wow! I'm so glad I did. I think it's sensational! Also, I think Audie gives a brilliant performance...without question, the best of his career (of the 2 dozen films I've seen.)

It would have been even better if it hadn't had so much edited out of it. The cut parts are gone forever too. It wasn't a hit when it was released, but is a classic now. I agree his performance was outstanding.

I believe John Huston. He said it was the BEST movie he EVER made but was ruined by the studio bosses (Schary?) who was against the movie from it's very beginning.

If I could have ONE wish about ONE Audie movie ... it would be this one: Give us back the original unedited, directors cut of RED BADGE OF COURAGE.

Wouldn't it be awesome to discover, in the deep recesses of some closet or attic, a locked file cabinet which contained the cut footage of The Red Badge of Courage?!

Even though the film was butchered by the studio bosses, the amazing artistry of the part that was left cannot be denied. It was/is such an exceptional piece of work. Audie's brilliance...Mauldin's...Huston's...they're all there. Just too little of it!
