Okay guys ... time to shift gears.

The folks at the good ole Smithsonian wrote a bio to go on the voting page for each portrait candidate. I was reading Audie's rather closely and noticed (Ruxy Walsh spotted it too) that the Smithonian people wrote that Audie Murphy was an alcoholic. (http://blog.americanhistory.si.edu/osay ... -hero.html)

Please go to the Smithsonian's bio page on Audie and leave a comment on this. IT IS WRONG as you all know and needs to be fixed. (The bio was researched and written by Ms. Kathleen Golden).

When you leave your comment, you may want to also copy it and paste it into the another contact form for their website at ... http://americanhistory.si.edu/about/con ... tactkey=17

I rooted around and found the author's contact information...

The author of the Audie bio is ...

Kathleen Golden
Assistant Curator
Division of Armed Forces History
Phone number: 202-633-3950

I would GREATLY appreciate this lady getting some concerned phone calls. Please emphasize ...

    1. Audie rarely if EVER drank. No reputable references that he did exist.
    2. Audie was addicted to sleeping pills based on the careless prescription given to him by a doctor. Omitting the extra information puts Audie's character in an undeserved light.

I will try to call from Japan myself, but I don't expect to get through. Your help would be appreciated. I have also alerted Larryann and spammed the message board users.

Okay ... I made a phone call and left a message for Ms. Golden. This number is good BUT you have to punch in extension 2. I made all three points above too. Let's hope the lady listens to her voice-mail. :)]

Ruxy left them a comment about it too, so I'm sure they're informed now. :D

UPDATE: I got a call last night at 1 a.m. from the curator. She agreed to pull the the erroneous reference to the word alcohol. I just check the bio and the word is now gone. I think this is a problem solved.

Good to know they read the e-mail and listen to calls. I noticed the word alcohol was gone, too. I sent my message and told them they could find anything they want to know about Audie at this website. Way to go Richard. :ymapplause:

I wish the curator had mentioned how Audie dealt with the sleeping pill addiction and wouldn't let it get the best of him.

They know about the sleeping pill struggle Audie had, thanks to a careless prescription, and Audie's struggle to go "cold turkey", no thanks to any doctor, when he realized he was addicted. I made sure that the point was made last night when I spoke to the curator. I told her that she could reference the website bio and also contact me or Larryann for more details. I received an email from Larryann on this and she contacted them too. I am sure the Smithsonian folks will be more thoughtful on what they say about Audie in the future.
