Despite Staff
Sergeant Murphy's reluctance to become an officer, he finally accepts a
battlefield commission. The battalion commander has obtained a waiver to
the 3rd Infantry Division's rule that soldiers receiving battlefield
commissions must be transferred to another unit. He also informs Staff
Sergeant Murphy that he can complete his education through educational
courses and become eligible to attend West Point.
In this scene, the battalion commander pins on Lieutenant Murphy's bars and
declares ... "You're now a gentleman by act of Congress. Take a bath and
get a shave..." The Colonel then looks at Audie's face and notices the
lack of facial growth and states "Well, take a bath anyway."
