Shortly after
cleaning out the second floor Nazi machine gun nest, Sergeant Murphy turns
and is surprised by someone holding a weapon pointed at him. With
lightning-like reflexes, Sergeant Murphy begins firing at the person with his Thompson
machine gun. The "enemy" is instantly killed as a mirror is shattered
from Sergeant Murphy's bullets. Sergeant Murphy realizes he has
shot himself by firing at his own reflection. Another soldier, played by
Jack Kelly, taunts Sergeant Murphy for being the only Texan that managed to
"outdraw himself". Although the movie makes this scene to be somewhat humorous,
it effectively demonstrates how tense and "keyed up" Sergeant Murphy and
his soldiers were on a minute to minute basis. It also shows how quickly a
situation can turn against the foot soldier.
