Shortly after
Naples, Allied forces consisting of British, Canadian, and American soldiers
bypass Cassino by conducting an amphibious invasion outside of Anzio, Italy.
This invasion will also divert five crack German divisions away from the Normandy
invasion which will take place along the French coast.
After the amphibious invasion of Anzio, Baker Company began using an abandoned
cottage as a forward observation post. Unfortunately, so were the Germans.
The farmhouse was, according to the movie, "taken five times and lost six." In
this scene, a group of inexperienced replacements have just reported to
Sergeant Murphy in the middle of the cottage siege. Sergeant Murphy now has
to not only lead his men into recapturing the farmhouse, but he must also
control the rising fear and panic of the new recruits who have never
experienced combat.
