After more than two months of continuous contact, nerves are shot. The
weather during the Allied advance toward Salerno doesn't help any either and
steady rainfall makes conditions miserable. The mud stops the advance near
the Italian town of Cassino. Here, Corporal Murphy separates two of his
men who have begun to argue heatedly. In the same scene, the previously
wounded lieutenant returns from the an Army field hospital fully recovered
with news that Corporal Murphy is promoted to Sergeant. And better yet, the
lieutenant informs the men they will be sent for a day and a night to Naples
for medical examinations and relaxation.
