During the assault on the Volturno River near Salerno, Italy Corporal
Murphy discovers his platoon sergeant is dead and the platoon leader is
seriously wounded after taking a direct hit from a German artillery round.
Corporal Murphy quickly takes over and radios to the company commander the
status of his platoon. He tells the commander that the platoon is pinned
down on the river bank and is taking a pounding. The company commander
tells Corporal Murphy that he is now in charge of 3rd Platoon and must
not fall back but cross the river. Corporal Murphy quickly acknowledges
his orders and begins to carry them out. As he leads his men forward into
the river, the German artillery fire shifts upriver toward the 7th Regiment
which is where the main river crossing effort is occurring. Corporal Murphy
is successful in safely leading the remaining portion of his platoon across
the river.
