A newly arrived
Private Audie Murphy is quietly stitching his 3rd Infantry Patch to the
shoulder of his uniform when a fellow platoon member, played by Marshall
Thompson, takes Private Murphy's rifle. Ignoring Private Murphy's request
to return the rifle, the soldier points the rifle at another comrade,
played by Jack Kelly, and tells Kelly to drink from a bottle of bad wine.
After Kelly complies, Thompson gives the rifle to Kelly and declares that
it is his turn to force him to drink. Private Murphy listens quietly and comes
to the realization that these soldiers aren't bad people but instead are
decent human beings with their own set of dreams.
