On June 2, 1997 the city of Greenville, Texas in conjunction with the United States Postal Service
honored Audie Murphy with a special cancellation mark on mail sent through the
Greenville, Texas main post office. The envelope above bears that cancellation
mark.
This particular envelope is also hand painted with an image of Audie Murphy
wearing his Medal of Honor. Hand painted envelopes commemorating a topic of
interest are known as "cachets" and are very collectible. Cachets are
considered by many collectors to be a very refined form of stamp collecting
because of the effort which is needed to produce each individual cachet.
Each cachet also comes with a brief biography of Audie Murphy and is signed
and numbered by the artist.
